The old way of installing a burglar alarm was to try to frighten away the burglar. It still might work to some extent, but there are better ways now.
The term "burglar alarm" is not really an accurate definition, because people break in to premises for various reasons, and so "intruder alarm" is the official way to describe this piece of electronic equipment. Its usefulness is often never fully realised, because the average household or business premises might go for many years without ever having had the need to use the alarm system in anger. One intrusion is, however, full justification for having the alarm installed, provided that the system has the desired effect when called upon. Predicting the usefulness of a system is often coloured by consideration of the cost involved.
The degree of protection given by an alarm system can vary, and many "low security" systems need to be carefully considered from the point of view that they might not be adequate in the event of a serious intrusion.
